Early-Career Researchers Conference
The Centre d’Histoire des sociétés, des sciences et des conflits (CHSSC) at the Université de Picardie-Jules Verne (France) and the Department of History at the University of Warwick (UK), in partnership with the French Institute in London, are holding a one-day conference for early-career researchers on Thursday 15th December 2016.
The conference aims to foster Franco-British collaboration and to establish a network of French and British early-career scholars of the First World War. Following on from a successful event in 2015, this conference will bring together postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers based at French and British research institutions.
Our conference will consider the First World War as coalition warfare.
We intend to focus on the global and transnational nature of the First World War and to deploy several approaches to coalition warfare: military and operational issues, logistics, social experiences, cultural interactions and circulations within the coalitions, cultures and memories of coalition warfare. The conference will pay particular attention to methodological problems.
We welcome proposals from all disciplines and encourage comparative approaches.
Applicants are asked to submit a 300-word abstract of their proposed paper and a curriculum vita by 20 August 2016. Proposals may be submitted in either French or English. We intend to provide limited assistance towards travel expenses where speakers’ home institutions do not provide conference funding.
Accommodation on the 14th December can be provided, as long as applicants request it when they submit their proposal.
We intend to publish a selection of papers presented at the conference.

Appel à communication – La Première Guerre mondiale, guerre de coalition
Journée d’étude doctorale et post-doctorale
Le Centre d’Histoire des sociétés, des sciences et des conflits (CHSSC) de l’Université de Picardie-Jules Verne (France) et le Department of History, University of Warwick (UK) organisent une journée d’étude doctorale le jeudi 15 décembre 2016 en partenariat avec l’Institut Français au Royaume-Uni, qui accueillera la journée à Londres.
Cette journée a pour ambition de favoriser les contacts et la constitution d’un réseau de jeunes chercheurs franco-britanniques, dans le prolongement d’une première journée organisée en 2015. Elle rassemblera des doctorants ou post-doctorants issus de laboratoires français ou britanniques.
Le thème retenu pour l’année 2016 est : La Première Guerre mondiale, guerre de coalition.
S’inscrivant dans un renouvellement historiographique attentif aux logiques transnationales d’un conflit globalisé, cette journée souhaite mettre en perspective les différentes approches d’une guerre de coalition : alliances militaires, coordination tactique, organisation logistique, expériences sociales, contacts et échanges culturels, mémoires du conflit.
La journée souhaite en particulier mettre l’accent sur les approches méthodologiques liées à l’étude de la guerre de coalition : réflexion sur les sources et approches comparatives notamment.
Les propositions issues de toutes les disciplines sont les bienvenues. Les communications comparatives ou interdisciplinaires sont encouragées.
Les communications feront l’objet d’une publication.
Les propositions de communication en 300 mots environ seront accompagnées d’un curriculum vitae synthétique. Nous vous remercions d’indiquer dès à présent vos besoins en terme de transport et d’hébergement. Une prise en charge forfaitaire du transport pourra être envisagée pour ceux qui ne disposeraient pas de financement. L’hébergement pourra être assuré par l’Institut français pour la nuit du 14 décembre.
